The Rare & Exotic Spring Sale is this weekend, and it promises to bring the unique livestock it’s known for.
This is the 33rd annual spring event, as people from Alberta and Saskatchewan will be bringing their animals to sell at the Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition.
“It’s a sale for the hobbyist farmers, and also anybody who likes the smaller animals,” explained Sam Hardstaff, agriculture manager, Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition.
Animals such as miniature donkeys, miniature horses, Nubian goats, potbelly pigs, Indian blue peacocks, various chickens, and ducks, just to name a few.
“It’s very popular, It’s open to the public, they can come in ahead of time and look at the animals because the boxed animals, which is the rabbits and the chickens – the smaller animals – are all in cages,” said Hardstaff.
You never know what you might find down at the sale, as Hardstaff said the weirdest thing she has seen was an iguana one year.
The Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition hosts two rare and exotic sales a year, one for the spring and one for the fall, which is held in September.
Hardstaff said it’s important to hold this event as it showcases the agricultural roots of the city.
“In agriculture, people like to diversify. Even if they are a big grain farmer or a big cattle operation, they may have small kids and lots of farms will have chickens and a rabbit for a small child is a very nice pet. It’s important for the industry,” she said.
The auction will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday with the smaller animals and at then again 2 p.m. for the larger animals.
There is no cost of admission and all are welcome to view the animals.
“Even if they aren’t going to buy anything they can come out, especially if they have a family they can get right up close to the animals and have a look at them,” said Hardstaff.
